IELTS Writing Task 2
Question:
Some people believe that it is better to spend more money to eliminate the cause of crime, while others think that the government should spend more on punishment. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Crime remains a persistent challenge for governments around the world, prompting debates on the most effective methods to tackle it. Some people argue that governments should invest more resources in addressing the root causes of crime, while others believe that stricter punishments are a more effective deterrent. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why tackling the underlying causes of crime is a more sustainable solution.
On the one hand, supporters of harsher punishments believe that strict penalties can act as a powerful deterrent against criminal activities. When offenders are aware that severe consequences such as lengthy imprisonment or heavy fines await them, they may be less likely to engage in illegal behaviour. In addition, strong punishment systems can enhance public safety and social order, as dangerous criminals are removed from society. Many people also argue that victims deserve justice, and therefore governments should allocate more funds to strengthen the law enforcement system and judicial infrastructure to ensure criminals are punished appropriately.
On the other hand, many experts argue that focusing on the root causes of crime is a more effective long-term strategy. Factors such as poverty, unemployment, lack of education, and social inequality often push individuals towards criminal activities. By investing in education, job opportunities, and community development programs, governments can significantly reduce crime rates. Addressing these underlying issues not only prevents people from turning to crime but also promotes social stability and economic development. Therefore, preventative measures are often considered a more sustainable and cost-effective approach to crime reduction.
In conclusion, although strict punishments may discourage certain criminal behaviours and maintain public order, addressing the root causes of crime offers a more comprehensive and long-term solution. In my opinion, governments should prioritize preventative measures while still maintaining an effective legal system to deal with offenders.
